Release Date: May 5, 2020
Columbia, MO, May 5, 2020– Effective May 11, 2020 HELIX Specialty Diagnostics (HELIX) will be offering COV-ID AB (Antibody Assay) testing in accordance with the Emergency Guidance from the U.S. FDA. HELIX will primarily focus on providing testing to employers to support businesses returning to work, and is offering direct to consumer testing.
The SARS-CoV-2 (COVID-19) pandemic has had a significant impact on the health of individuals and devasted the economy of the nation. Citizens have been infected and to date, it is unknown what long-term effects may be associated with the virus. Healthcare workers have been put in harm’s way, businesses have closed, some of them permanently. HELIX is supporting employers by offering serology testing of employees to aid in the detection of COVID-19 IgG antibody. This information may assist employers with determining workplace assignments and allaying employee anxiety.
To differentiate, the current COVID-19 testing is focused on identifying those infected with the virus using a nasal swab. This COVID-19 virus test determines whether the individual being tested has the virus at the time of specimen collection. A result of Not Detected is not indicative of previous COVID-19 infection nor does it rule out future COVID-19 infection. Recently the national and local discussions have focused on antibody testing. This is the testing HELIX is offering. The COVID-19 AB (Antibody Assay) uses a blood sample. The value of antibody testing is tremendous as it will aid in disease epidemiology and surveillance. Every bit as important, antibody testing can help determine who has been exposed to COVID-19. Those known to have had the virus and the many who have been exposed yet were asymptomatic can be tested for the COVID-19 IgG antibody. A positive result (detection of COVID-19 antibodies) indicates previous infection with SARS-CoV-2.
